Tom Lewis is our new identity for the established design business Tom Lewis Studio Ltd., which celebrates 30 years in January 2007. During this time we have combined traditional values with quality service; and contemporary thinking with innovative design. This has enabled us to embrace change and move into a new future.
The founder of the company, Tom Lewis, has been involved in the textile design business since 1957 and has seen many changes during that time. Tom began by supplying designs to the booming Manchester print business in the 1950s. But as the market has changed so has the company. Tom Lewis Studio’s rapidly expanded into the North American market in the 1960s and during the 1990s was one of the first studios to enter the Far East market attending Japantex in 1993. Since that time we have formed successful partnerships in China, Japan and South Korea. Just recently we have formalised a new business partner within China, one step closer to opening up our own offices out there.
The business is continually grasping new ventures and embracing new opportunities. The company has been at the forefront of many new developments within home patterning, be they wallcoverings or textiles. The company was one of the first design studios to exhibit at Heimtextil in 1977 and was a founder exhibitor at the Surtex show in New York. As well as their formidable reputation for having the best hand painted artwork, Tom Lewis was also one of the very first studios to develop CAD technology as they invested in one of the very early generation TCS systems in 1993. This insight into future consumer needs; realising the power of the room mapping tool was groundbreaking, and is now an established practise in studios around the world today.
